Early this morning, this is what went down-
Some folks have seen us at the various events over the last couple years and of those people, a few of you may have seen or met my daughter at these events. If you don’t know, she is my main job and as such, Vegan Bodega hasn’t progressed as fast as I and, I am sure, you would have liked. We are working on her going to school and that means more time to get this store open for everyone. At about 6:20 this morning I got a nice kick in the pants and a tearful moment. Awoken by my dear, restless little girl to use the facilities the first time at 5:54. I could not get back to sleep after that and 20 minutes later I am called again as she needs to address the same issue as before. Keep in mind she is not yet 3 and wobbly due to being half asleep. I crouch, awaiting her decleration of, “All Done!” While we are waiting for her to conclude her business, she just lifts her head up and looks at me to say, “Daddy, you’re going to open a big bodega!” Not hearing her correctly, I asked, “You are going to open a big bodega?” In a tone that I can only describe as, why don’t parents listen tone- “No, YOU are going to open a big bodegaaa! ………. And sell caviar………… and Honee……….. and chia pouches. You gonna do it.” Previously I had thought, I want to have a small business that can help my family but also instill in my daughter that you can do work that you love, make some money to live and be as true to your values as possible. Now I know I need to also show her how to plan, execute and follow through, overcoming obstacles, pushing harder when it gets difficult and believing that you don’t know how far you can go without pushing yourself out of what is safe, comfortable and known. So I will now double down, seek out assistance to properly set this business up and will be trying to open a store that you will not just visit but love and return to!
Many people have asked us at the Vegan Shop-up, on the phone and via email, “When are you going to open?” We still do not have a definitive date for you but there is a plan on the table to try and open a popup in Williamsburg. We hope to know soon if we will proceed. If we can make it work we will be doing a grassroots fundraising effort that will go on at the same time where you will get credit/gift certificate at the store when we open. We would only collect money if we reached a preset goal. Sound good? This way you can invest in us and we can show you appreciation by giving you a little something extra in return.
We did a gift basket previously. It did not sell as well as expected so we have decided not to do it for the 2012 holiday season.
This Saturday, the 22nd, we will be at our new stall at Smorgasburg, where you can also find Barry’s Tempeh and Electric Blue Baking. Vegan Bodega is very excited to have the chance to bring you a limited assortment of vegan goodies. We are looking forward to seeing you there.

There has been a lack of communication lately. We have been busy after the end of our IndieGoGo project to finish the design and sort out the printing of the bags, tees and buttons. The other item we have been working towards was to be included as a seller at Smorgasburg. Yesterday the organizers of Smorgasburg/Brooklyn Flea notified us that we have been apporved as a vendor! We are hoping to be there next weekend, but we may have to delay till the 29th of Oct. We will let you know as soon as we have a firm date.
Calling out the vegan army. ha ha! Seriously though, we are well short of the mark for our goal. Right now we need to raise a little more then $11,000. Please tell all your friends about this project. Any help is very much appreciated.
This is fantastic. We are now featured on the front page of IndieGoGo’s homepage. This is going to expose our project to a lot more eyes and will be a wonderful thing for the vegans of NYC! Thank you everyone for your support and kind words.
Vegan Bodega crowd-funding effort started on IndieGoGo.com about 7 days ago. At this point we have raised approximately 15% of your goal and the press coverage has amazing. Folks not only in New York are excited, but all over the US and as far away as Russia. We need to keep this momentum going, please continue to share the project’s link with all your friends. If you get the chance, like us on Facebook so we can keep you updated with Vegan Bodega news!
I am a bit at a loss to explain how we have generated such interest in our little project. It is wonderful and I suppose part of the fantastic nature of the internet- how easily information and be found and distributed. So here is a list of the more recent press we have received. Please check it out, most notably the Gothamist article. It is a nice article, but the best part are the ridiculous comments. It reminds me that even if I don’t directly challenge people’s food choices, they hear vegan and some just get defensive and nasty. They neither know me, my family nor my motives. These people have a lot of time and not much else it seems. So sad.
FYI- To anyone that thinks a stay at home parent, be it a mom or dad, is a deadbeat for not working outside the home so they can care of their child (which is itself a full time job), then you are a special kind of ignorant.
Today there was a short write up in VegNews on our efforts to open the store. Check it out here- http://bit.ly/nVdqYZ
This is fantastic and all the support and comments we have been getting is tremendous! To think, this is only the beginning of our venture!
*Update– We were just featured on another blog, Ecorazzi! http://bit.ly/oBVi6t We are so very happy with all the excitement surrounding our small idea.*
Firstly, all I can say is wow! The response and the excitement for Vegan Bodega’s opening is more then we had anticipated. Within the first day of this project, we were able to raise about 3% of our goal! That’s huge and we are so thankful for those who donated, re-tweeted, posted on their Facebook profiles and just talked about us.
We are going to make this store a reality, together! We will update you soon!
